The Graduate School launched in October 2016 to provide a supportive hub for postgraduate research students across the Open University. A key element of support provided by the Graduate School is the co-ordination of core academic skills and development, including transferable skills and professional development in partnership with colleagues across the university including, for the PACE programme, in the School of Languages and Linguistics in the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies.

The Open University The role

The Open University is recruiting a new academic role to support doctoral research students develop their writing through the Professional Academic Communication in English (PACE) programme. The role offers an exciting opportunity to build on, and further develop the programme, popular with the OU doctoral researcher community. The successful candidate will have undertaken (or be close to finishing) their own doctorate, have experience in developing students’ academic reading, writing and presentation practices and be able to support both UK and international doctoral students, from a wide range of linguistic and disciplinary backgrounds.

Skills and experience

  • A doctorate, or equivalent experience
  • A relevant academic background in English Language, Applied Linguistics, Literacies, EAP or equivalent
  • Relevant experience of group facilitation and/or teaching
  • Experience of developing or supporting postgraduate writers
  • A theoretical/research-informed understanding, as well as a practical understanding, of doctoral writing and familiarity with a wide range of academic genres
