This role serves as the advisor for online master’s students and certificate students, including Coursera-based degree students (Coursera) and supports upcoming online initiatives. Through proactive outreach and communication, the graduate advisor informs and advises students of their degree and admissions achievements and tracks their progress towards fulfilling them; advises students about the nature and content of the program’s curricula; helps prepare students to take advantage of professional development, and community-building opportunities.The Data Science Program (DS) is committed to developing collaborative, student-centered relationships between graduate program advisors and graduate students that support achievement of academic success through performance-based admissions, promote personal and professional development of students, and foster a sense of community for our graduate students.The DS Online Graduate Program Specialist supports the student through a developmental, student-focused approach.   • Performs academic advising for Coursera and online students within the program, consistent with current advising standards and protocols with tasks including but not limited to:
  • Tracking student progress by maintaining student records.
  • Maintaining and updating degree plans, advising Coursera/online students regarding academic requirements and options for completing them, knowing the latest on changing curriculum. Uses degree audit system as appropriate.
  • Reviewing and processing student requests and ensuring students receive communication and responses in a timely manner.
  • Helping students with course registration issues as needed, including requests for late registration/changes or leave of absence.
  • Serving as Coursera/online student liaison with the DS staff and faculty, presenting student petitions, as needed.
  • Serves as first main point of contact for current students completing their pathway courses who are seeking admission to the MS-DS program, addressing student questions or concerns.
  • Collaborates with Online Senior Graduate Program Specialist on ways and communications to increase retention and admission rates.
  • Creates and manages proactive outreach and communication plan for prospective students, students seeking and working towards admission to the MS-DS program, and students pursuing the Online Data Science Graduate Certificate.
  • Assists students with problem-solving and campus resources.
  • Creates documents/ systems that can support a large group of students to scale.

Recruitment, Admissions and Communication:

  • Collaborates with other DS program staff to ensure information on the program’s graduate program website is accurate, compelling, and up-to-date. Keeps recruitment materials up to date.
  • Collaborates with Coursera marketing and enrollment teams to keep enrollment information up-to-date. Participates in recruitment efforts and collaborates on ways to reach a more diverse audience, including attending recruitment events.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for prospective students, answering questions via email, phone, and advising appointments.
  • Manages admissions process and sends admissions decisions and coordinates the mailing of admissions packages at the end of every session.
  • Assists other DS program staff in sending regular messages through CRM system, including deadlines, announcements, etc., as well as unlinked accounts weekly messages.
  • Conducts visual compliance and other mandated reports.
  • Assists in webinars and other recruitment efforts.
  • Advocates for student services and notify students of upcoming opportunities, specifically creating a community within the online student population.
  • Assists in planning student events, including career-related events, student networking and community-building opportunities, and graduation recognition ceremonies.
  • Collaborates with departments on campus.

Other:

  • Supports the data science program with their events, talks, diversity and inclusion efforts and other projects as needed.
  • Designs and coordinates student-focused events to promote a sense of community and increase retention rates among current and prospective graduate students.
  • Serves as the online staff liaison for the student organization, Data Science Student Association and advocates for online students.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises one Graduate Student Assistant.
  • Helps the program with other projects, where and when needed.
  • Undertakes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Stays apprised and current on relevant University and State of Colorado policies and procedures.
  • Participates in professional development activities and serves on unit, college, or campus committees as applicable.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • One year of experience in advising, student services, or other relevant experience (i.e. program administration, marketing/communications, admissions, etc.).
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. higher education administration) from an accredited institution.
  • Experience supporting online, graduate and/or adult learners.
  • Familiarity with the Master of Science in Data Science program and systems at the University of Colorado Boulder.
