The University of Cambridge is pleased to announce this opportunity for an experienced laboratory animal veterinary surgeon to join our team within the University Biomedical Services division.

You will work as a Named Veterinary Surgeon as defined by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, to provide a comprehensive veterinary services to the animal species housed within University biomedical research facilities. This shall include the provision of technical advice, clinical care and veterinary treatments, support and delivery of training within the UBS Training School. This will require regular liaison with the other NVSs, licensees and technical staff in regard to animal care and welfare concerns, health surveillance and other veterinary issues.

As well as providing clinical veterinary care you will also have responsibility to ensure compliance with specific legislation in relation to the health and welfare of a variety of laboratory animal species within the Establishment. This includes providing technical advice to researchers for both regulated and non-regulated animal research and as part of the Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body (AWERB) process; overseeing compliance of specialist functions, for example: aseptic surgery, quarantine and housing of immunocompromised animals; and the control and use of controlled drugs. You will be responsible for the effective delivery and management of programmes for health surveillance and disease control, analysing health surveillance data for animal import / exports, risks relating to zoonotic and notifiable diseases and disease outbreak management.

Applicants must have their own method of transport for travel between biomedical facility sites and respond to out of hours emergency call outs, covering approximately one week in three. Any out of hours work will be compensated.

Fixed Term: The role is available immediately, for a fixed period of two years in the first instance.

Applicants must be qualified veterinarians, members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and preferably have further qualifications and/or experience in a discipline relevant to laboratory animal sciences e.g. CertLAS, DLAS, ECLAM diploma and/or PhD. Experience in a similar role (in an academic, practice or commercial environment) and an interest in laboratory animal disease/pathology and anaesthesia would be an advantage. You will be an excellent communicator, able to communicate confidently with individuals at all levels, using both written and oral communication methods, including the ability to explain clinical and scientific data to lay-people. You will be a strong team player who is self-motivated, able to manage your own workload.
