Summary

The U.S. Air Force uses Direct Hire Authorities (DHA) to quickly recruit qualified candidates for select occupations. DHA allows the Air Force to hire talented individuals directly from the public — even if they do not have previous federal employment — through an expedited hiring process that bypasses some traditional requirements.

Requirements & Conditions of Employment

  • Citizenship: U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Telework: May be authorized, depending on the position.
  • Relocation (PCS): If authorized, Permanent Change of Station costs will be paid in accordance with Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) and Air Force policies. A CONUS agreement may be required. More PCS details.
  • Security Clearance: Requirements vary by position.
  • Duty Location: Locations are not negotiable and depend on mission needs. Available duty stations are listed on the Air Force Civilian Service website.
  • Drug Testing: Some positions may require random drug testing.
  • Supervisory Roles: Certain positions may include supervisory duties.
  • Promotion Potential: May be authorized, depending on the role.
  • Childcare Discounts: Full-time and part-time employees in direct childcare roles may be eligible for discounts per DAF AFSVC/CC Memo dated 30 Sep 22: 100% for the first child, 25% for each additional child; other CYP and FCC staff may receive a 25% discount.
