Job Summary:
The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers, and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 700 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.
This paid internship* is located in the Congressional Staff Academy department within the Customer Experience Center (CEC) business unit of the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), U.S. House of Representatives (House). The Congressional Staff Academy provides House staff with professional development and training designed for the unique job roles across Capitol Hill. The Congressional Staff Academy specializes in leadership and management education tailored to meet office needs. The Congressional Staff Academy also hosts training from departments across the House to include mandatory technical and compliance training for all House staff.
Interns are appointed on a temporary basis for a period not to exceed 120 days. Interns will be provided a structured educational opportunity through exposure to the business operations of the U.S. House of Representatives. This position will be provided the opportunity to rotate through different assignments to gain real life experience for their degree, certification, or professional development.
The Staff Academy intern will work closely with senior House training staff and will learn about how the House works and how to teach and train House staff to excel at their jobs. The position offers a behind the scenes view into the world of House staffing. Interns will also learn and improve their written, organizational, and technical skills and gain career mentors. Interns will have the opportunity to sit in on training sessions usually offered only for House staff.
We’re looking for strong communicator with an enthusiasm for politics and the House and learning about staff education. This is a non-partisan position and interns should be willing to work with staff from both sides of the aisle.
- paid at an annual rate of $36,469 not to exceed 120 days
** The CAO standard business hours are 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week internship that will require onsite attendance in Washington, D.C.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Answering incoming calls with poise, professionalism, and promptness.
- Sort incoming requests for Coach 1 on 1’s, panels, and upcoming courses.
- Assist Congressional Staff Academy and Coaches with written and video programming.
- Edit videos before adding them to our website.
- Research, edit and help prepare course materials and website content based upon approved curriculum development plan.
- Staff CAO Coach/CEC events
- Performs other official duties as assigned. Help

Qualifications
Requirements: - Associate degree or certification from an accredited business or technical school, or enrolled student in a community college, junior college, university, or graduate school program preferred.
- Experience working in a professional office setting preferred.
- Must be able to work with all levels of a multifaceted workforce. Ability to multi-task and work well both independently and on a team required.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, as well as the ability to establish effective working relationships with senior staff and other high-ranking officials.
- Ideal candidate will be a results-oriented team player possessing an interest in public service.
