Summary
The Supervisory Biomedical Engineer (BME) in the Healthcare Technology Management (HTM)/Biomedical Engineering unit reports to the Associate Director at the Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (MVAHS). The BME serves as the key HTM official responsible for managing the full range of medical technology at the Miami VA Healthcare System.
Position Overview
The HTM team at Miami VA supports medical devices and systems valued at over $83 million, including advanced diagnostic imaging, PACS, surgical video suites, endoscopy, surgical robots, clinical information systems, anesthesia record-keeping, and more. The Miami VA Healthcare System is a large, 1a-complexity medical center with the Bruce W. Carter VA Medical Center and eight community-based outpatient clinics throughout South Florida.
The Supervisory Biomedical Engineer provides leadership in advising clinical and administrative personnel on healthcare technology acquisition, replacement, and management. Responsibilities include developing technical and clinical requirements, evaluating solutions, and overseeing implementation—including installation, integration, and staff education.
Key Duties
- Supervise a Biomedical Engineering team of 15 staff, including 12 technicians, a supervisor, and program support assistant.
- Manage staffing, performance evaluations, workload distribution, training, and personnel matters in coordination with section supervisors.
- Oversee compliance and reporting related to medical devices, cybersecurity, and equipment isolation.
- Direct the medical equipment management program, including budget oversight for operations, personnel, and discretionary spending.
- Ensure delivery of high-quality customer service to clinical and administrative staff.
- Lead or oversee project management for medical technology initiatives—from planning and construction design reviews to installation and training.
- Implement strategies for technology application and support, monitor performance, and recommend upgrades or modifications.
- Collaborate with Facilities Management to address construction impacts related to new medical equipment acquisitions.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Basic Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (e.g., Biomedical, Clinical, Electrical, Mechanical, Bioengineering, or related fields).
OR - Certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) with a relevant bachelor’s degree.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Experience & Grade Determination
- For GS-14 Supervisory Biomedical Engineer:
- Minimum of one year of experience at the GS-13 level or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to manage department resources (finance, space, staffing, equipment) in a complex medical environment.
- Skill in policy development related to healthcare technology management.
- Effective leadership and organizational skills, including conflict resolution and team management.
- Experience analyzing operational problems and implementing solutions to improve efficiency and performance.
- Experience must be healthcare-related for clinical positions or research-related for research positions.
