Overview

This is a Title 32 Excepted Service position within the Arizona Army National Guard. As the Supervisory Aircraft Flight Instructor, you will lead and manage the Operations and Training Section of the Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF #1) in Phoenix, AZ. You will supervise a team of 3–12 personnel, including flight instructors, engineers, and operations specialists, while also performing critical flight instructor duties in rotary or fixed-wing aircraft.

Primary Duties

  • Direct and supervise flight operations and aviation training programs.
  • Instruct and evaluate aviators in both routine and advanced flight maneuvers, including night-vision and instrument flight operations.
  • Conduct safety oversight and manage operational risk for aircraft missions.
  • Supervise mission planning, preflight checks, intelligence briefings, crew readiness, and flight scheduling.
  • Support and enforce operational policies, SOPs, and aviation safety standards.
  • Plan, assign, and evaluate work for subordinate personnel in grades through GS-13.

Requirements

  • Must be a current or eligible member of the Arizona Army National Guard.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Required to wear the military uniform and maintain a compatible military assignment.
  • Must meet all aviation certification and branch-specific qualifications.
  • Security clearance required.
  • May be required to work irregular hours, rotating shifts, or in support of contingency operations.

Qualifications

General Experience:
One year of on-the-job experience at the next lower grade level (or comparable military rank).

Specialized Experience:

  • Demonstrated expertise as a pilot and flight instructor in military aircraft (rotary/fixed-wing or RPA).
  • Proficiency in air navigation, meteorology, flight operations, safety programs, and mission planning.
  • Experience leading standardization, evaluation, and combat readiness training.
  • Proven ability to manage training schedules, coordinate airspace with FAA, and ensure compliance with safety and operational directives.
  • At least two years of experience instructing in a specific airframe.
  • Familiarity with Army aviation publications, policies, and risk management practices.
