Summary
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is hiring Substitute Teachers for schools located in:
- Aguadilla/Borinquen, Puerto Rico
- Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico

Note: Accepting a substitute position does not impact Military Spouse Preference (MSP) eligibility.

Position Overview
As a Substitute Teacher, you will:
- Provide instruction in the absence of the regular teacher, following school curricula and policies.
- Promote academic, social, and emotional development.
- Interact effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Perform assigned non-instructional duties.
- Report to and be supervised by the school principal.
- Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with privacy policies.
Conditions of Employment
- Intermittent schedule with no guarantee of hours—work is dependent on teacher absences.
- No benefits (e.g., health insurance, retirement) are provided with this temporary appointment.
- Must reside in the local commuting area.
- Must be 18 years or older and successfully complete a background investigation.
- Subject to periodic re-verification of eligibility and suitability.
- Must comply with the Dual Compensation Act unless employed in a Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF) position.
Qualification Levels
Applicants will be referred for selection based on one of the following levels:
- Level 1 – Certified Teacher
Valid, unexpired teaching certificate issued by any U.S. state or territory.
Documents Required: Teaching certificate and official transcripts (in English). - Level 2 – Bachelor’s Degree or Higher
Degree from an accredited college or university.
Documents Required: Official transcripts (in English). - Level 3 – Associate’s Degree or 60 Semester Hours
Associate’s degree or 60+ credit hours from an accredited institution.

Foreign Education: Must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a recognized credentialing agency. More info here
Additional Information
- Standing Register Announcement: Applications are reviewed as positions become available. Appointments are temporary and may span an academic year.
- Applicants may select multiple schools but will be hired for one “home” school; other nearby schools may share substitute teachers as needed.
- Applications are valid for 3 months. To remain active, you must reapply every 90 days.
