Naval Sea Systems Command

Summary

As a Computer Scientist, you will support software development for weapon system fire control. This includes both internal tools and deployed tactical systems. Positions are available at various levels (ND-03 and ND-04), with increasing responsibility for leadership, design, and system architecture.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or support software development for defense systems.
  • Work on Agile teams alongside Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and customers.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies such as daily standups, sprint planning, and sprint reviews.
  • Design, develop, and modify software applications and tools.
  • Apply and promote secure coding practices and perform code reviews.
  • Analyze requirements and propose technical solutions.
  • Mentor peers and junior developers at full performance level.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and software development trends.
  • Address cybersecurity requirements during all phases of development.

Qualifications

ND-03 Level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the ND-02 (GS-05 to GS-08) level in:

  • Software development or software testing as a professional scientist.

OR
Advanced education (see “Education” below).

ND-04 Level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the ND-03 (GS-09 to GS-11) level in:

  • Software design, development, testing, integration, or sustainment for system engineering projects.

Education Substitution

ND-03 Only:

  • A Master’s or equivalent graduate degree,
  • Two full years of graduate education, or
  • LL.B. or J.D. degree related to the role,
  • Or a combination of education and experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must pass E-Verify and be eligible for federal employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Must meet Cybersecurity Workforce Certification requirements per SECNAV M-5239.2:
    • ND-03: Framework Role 621, Level Basic (within 12 months)
    • ND-04: Framework Role 621, Level Intermediate (within 12 months)
  • Travel may be required, including to remote or overseas locations.
  • Male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Retired military personnel must comply with 5 U.S.C. § 3326.
