Overview

This General Engineer position (Series 0801) is being filled using Direct Hire Authority, allowing for expedited hiring without the use of traditional rating and ranking procedures. Applications are open to U.S. Citizens, including those eligible under Schedule A, Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA), 30% or More Disabled Veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Key Duties

As a General Engineer, you will perform professional engineering responsibilities that do not fall under a single discipline but draw on broad engineering knowledge and skills. Your work may include:

  • Applying fundamental engineering principles such as strength and strain analysis.
  • Understanding and utilizing physical and chemical material properties like stress limits, corrosion resistance, and workability.
  • Working across multiple engineering disciplines to support system design, evaluation, integration, or construction.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement

You must meet one of the following:

A. Engineering Degree (ABET-accredited)
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET OR with coursework covering calculus and five of the following seven topics:

  1. Statics/Dynamics
  2. Strength of Materials
  3. Fluid Mechanics/Hydraulics
  4. Thermodynamics
  5. Electrical Circuits
  6. Properties of Materials
  7. Other relevant engineering science (e.g., heat transfer, soil mechanics)

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience
Demonstrated knowledge of physical/mathematical sciences and engineering, verified by one of the following:

  1. Professional licensure (PE, EIT, or EI)
  2. Written exam such as FE
  3. 60 semester hours of engineering-related coursework
  4. Related degree (e.g., physics, computer science) + one year of professional engineering experience under supervision

Experience Requirements by Pay Band

FV-G (Entry-Level / GS-5/7/9 Equivalent):

  • Must meet the basic education requirement only.

FV-H (GS-11/12 Equivalent):

  • One year of specialized experience at the FV-G level, including:
    • Reviewing proposals, acquisition documents, or design specs.
    • Using design software or tools to assist in engineering analyses.

OR

  • Ph.D. or 3 years of graduate education in a related field.
  • OR an appropriate combination of education and experience.

FV-I (GS-13 Equivalent):

  • One year of specialized experience at FV-H level, such as:
    • Analyzing statistical/production data for quality/reliability standards.
    • Conducting technical studies (e.g., noise abatement).

FV-J (GS-14 Equivalent):

  • One year of specialized experience at FV-I level, such as:
    • Leading engineering projects or systems integration.
    • Diagnosing causes of system performance issues.

FV-K (GS-15 Equivalent):

  • One year of specialized experience at FV-J level, including:
    • Managing large-scale engineering systems or information networks.
    • Directing testing and evaluation efforts of complex systems.
