The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is seeking qualified applicants to fill Electrical Engineer positions (Series 0850) under Direct Hiring Authority. Basic Requirements

To qualify, you must meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualifications for professional engineering positions (Series 0800):

Option A – Degree in Engineering

Must be from an ABET-accredited program or include coursework in advanced math and five of seven core engineering science areas.

Option B – Combination of Education and Experience

Must demonstrate:

  1. Registration as an Engineer Intern (EI) or Professional Engineer (PE); or
  2. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam; or
  3. Completion of at least 60 semester hours in physical, math, and engineering sciences; or
  4. A related science degree with at least 1 year of professional engineering experience under supervision.

Qualification by Pay Band

FV-G (GS-5/7/9 equivalent)

  • Meet basic educational requirements only.

FV-H (GS-10/11 equivalent)

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-G, such as:
    • Adapting electrical equipment or selecting systems to achieve required controls or voltages.
    • Working with airfield lighting or navigational systems.
    • Applying knowledge of electrical circuits, systems, and their applications.

OR

  • Completion of 3 years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

FV-I (GS-12/13 equivalent)

  • One year of specialized experience at FV-H level, such as:
    • Troubleshooting power systems and testing equipment.
    • Solving operational issues and conducting site surveys.
    • Estimating project costs and timelines.

FV-J (GS-14 equivalent)

  • One year of specialized experience at FV-I level, including:
    • Designing and interpreting electrical plans and schematics.
    • Leading research and development in aviation-related electrical systems.
    • Managing technical projects with broad regional or system-wide impact.

FV-K (GS-15 equivalent)

  • One year of specialized experience at FV-J level, including:
    • Designing and inspecting power systems or power plant electrical infrastructure.
    • Providing expert engineering policy guidance.
    • Leading design and construction priorities at the agency level.

Education Documentation
