Summary: Computer Engineer (Series 0854) – Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Hiring through Direct-Hire Authority

The FAA is seeking highly qualified U.S. citizens to fill Computer Engineering positions (Series 0854) across multiple pay bands (FV-G through FV-K). These roles involve professional engineering work that integrates principles of computer hardware, software systems, systems architecture, and mathematics. The focus is on research, design, development, testing, evaluation, and maintenance of integrated hardware and software systems, especially in support of the National Airspace System (NAS).

Duties May Include:

  • Supporting the maintenance and modernization of communications, navigation, and surveillance equipment
  • Conducting hardware/software integration and systems design for FAA operational platforms (e.g., ERAM, STARS, ASDE-X)
  • Leading or contributing to data reduction systems, system evaluations, and feasibility studies
  • Advising on digital control, hardware/software upgrades, and data processing systems
  • Performing systems engineering, quality assurance, and integration of new technologies into NAS infrastructure

Qualifications Overview:

Basic Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution OR a combination of education and experience meeting OPM standards for professional engineering positions.

Pay Band FV-G:

  • Must meet basic education requirements.

Pay Band FV-H:

  • Requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-G (GS-5/7/9) or a qualifying Ph.D. or combination of education and experience.

Pay Band FV-I:

  • Requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H (GS-11/12).

Pay Band FV-J:

  • Requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I (GS-13), including leadership in hardware/software evaluation and integration.

Pay Band FV-K:

  • Requires 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-J (GS-14), including expert-level systems engineering, integration of new technologies, and resolution of complex technical challenges.

Special Notes:

  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Position may require a background check and pre-employment physical.
