Summary – Civil Engineer (Series 0810)

This position is being filled under a Direct Hire Authority for the 0810 Civil Engineering occupational series. The selected candidate will provide professional civil engineering expertise in support of the FAA’s mission, focusing on the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure that supports the national airspace system.

Primary Duties

As a Civil Engineer, you will:

  • Apply engineering principles in mechanics of solids (especially soils), hydraulics, structural theory, strength of materials, surveying, and engineering geology.
  • Plan, design, construct, and maintain infrastructure such as runways, roads, drainage systems, and facilities.
  • Conduct surveys, mapping, and research to support infrastructure projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate projects with contractors and agency engineers.
  • Provide recommendations and technical advice related to safety, construction standards, and operational improvements.

Qualification Requirements

Basic Requirements (All Grades):

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or
  • A combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge of engineering principles, validated through:
    • Professional Engineering (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
    • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
    • Completion of qualifying coursework or related scientific degree with relevant experience

Grade-Level Specific Requirements:

  • FV-G (GS-5/7/9 equivalent): Meet basic requirements.
  • FV-H (GS-10/11/12): 1 year of specialized experience in design/construction of transportation infrastructure or equivalent graduate education.
  • FV-I (GS-13): Experience in planning, managing resources and schedules, and advising on technical requirements for engineering projects.
  • FV-J (GS-14): Experience in applying FAA airport construction standards, shaping agency policy, and providing technical input on design/construction.
  • FV-K (GS-15): Experience in providing expert guidance on FAA facility design, overseeing complex projects, and serving as the agency’s regional lead on infrastructure programs.

Education Requirements

  • A degree from an accredited institution is required. Transcripts must be submitted with your application.
  • Foreign education must be evaluated for equivalency by a recognized credential evaluation service.
