Summary – Airway Transportation Systems Specialist (Entry-Level)

As an entry-level Airway Transportation Systems Specialist (ATSS), you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System (NAS)—the world’s largest and most complex air traffic control and navigation system. ATSS professionals are responsible for installing, maintaining, evaluating, modifying, and certifying the electronic systems and services that support air traffic operations across the U.S.

This is a developmental position designed to provide technical training, hands-on experience, and career growth opportunities within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Key Responsibilities by Pay Band

At the FV-F Band (Entry Level):

  • Receive structured training and perform basic tasks related to system operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Learn to use specialized electronic test equipment to inspect and repair systems.
  • Develop foundational skills for maintaining NAS systems such as radar, communications, navigation aids, and automation systems.
  • Apply fundamental knowledge in electronics, math (algebra/trigonometry), physics, and computer systems.

At the FV-G Band (Full Performance Level):

  • Independently maintain and operate single or integrated systems critical to NAS performance.
  • Interpret technical manuals, FAA orders, and schematics to carry out complex maintenance tasks.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and certify systems including communications, radar, navigation, and environmental controls.
  • Conduct system integration and documentation using test equipment and software tools.

Working Conditions

  • Based at or near airports, air traffic control towers, en route centers, or remote locations (including towers, mountaintops, or offshore).
  • May involve lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing structures up to 100 feet, and working in harsh weather.
  • Rotating shifts, weekend/holiday work, and travel (up to 75%) may be required.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet physical/sensory requirements (vision, hearing, etc.) are necessary.

Training

  • New hires may be required to attend formal training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, OK.

Qualifications

FV-F Level (Entry Level):

You qualify if you meet ONE of the following:

  • Work Experience: 3 years of general work experience related to electronics, aeronautics, math, or computer systems.
  • Education: A 4-year degree or 24 semester hours in fields like electronics, computer science, engineering, or math.
  • Combination: A mix of education and relevant experience totaling 100% of the requirement.

Preferred (Well-Qualified):

  • 1 year of specialized experience applying knowledge in electronics, computer systems, or telecommunications.

FV-G Level (Advanced Entry Level):

You qualify with:

  • 1 year of specialized experience (equivalent to the next lower grade) with hands-on experience in maintenance, repair, or integration of systems like:
    • Radar, HVAC, automation, communications, navigation aids, etc.

Or:

  • Education: A Ph.D., LL.M., or 3 years of graduate-level education in a related field.
  • Combination: A qualifying mix of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

FV-F:

  • Basic electronics and electro-mechanical theory.
  • Familiarity with test tools and troubleshooting practices.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair systems using drawings and tools.

FV-G:

  • Advanced troubleshooting and system repair.
  • Use of test equipment and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of FAA procedures and NAS-specific systems.

  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must register for Selective Service.
