Summary
This is an open continuous announcement that will remain open until filled. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis, and eligible candidates will be referred weekly for consideration until a selection is made.

Duties
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

To participate, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. T

he program’s approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application.

VA Total Rewards Package:

  • Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases.
  • Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays, and a possible 5-day paid absence for Continuing Medical Education (CME)).

This position is based at the Jacksonville VA (JAX 1 VA Clinic) under the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism section within the Medical Specialties Service. The Jacksonville VA 1 Clinic and the Gainesville (GNV) VA are integrated facilities. The appointed endocrinologist will report to the Chief of Endocrinology at the Malcolm Randall VAMC in Gainesville while practicing at the Jacksonville VA 1 Clinic.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Evaluating, treating, and monitoring a variety of endocrine-related conditions in an outpatient clinic setting.
  • Performing ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirate (FNA) thyroid biopsies as needed.
  • Providing comprehensive consultative care for patient referrals as necessary.
  • Diagnosing, treating, and consulting on non-surgical treatments for both inpatient and outpatient cases.
  • Managing a wide spectrum of patients with hormonal and endocrine disorders, including diabetes, thyroid disorders, and non-diabetic endocrine conditions.

Work Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility and patient care needs.

Requirements
Conditions of Employment:

  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Drug Testing: All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing-designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to be tested will result in denial of employment.
  • Selective Service Registration: Required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • English Proficiency: Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a probationary period.
  • Background Investigation: Subject to a background/security investigation.
  • Onboarding: Selected applicants must complete an online onboarding process.
  • Physical Examination: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Vaccination Requirements:
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all VA Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is mandatory for all Veterans Health Administration HCP.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Physician (Endocrinology) Basic Requirements:

  1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  2. Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited medical or osteopathic school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  3. Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  4. Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification. Approved residencies include:
  • Programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Non-U.S. residency programs followed by at least five years of verified practice in the U.S.
  1. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).

Physical Requirements:

  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019.
  • This position requires moderate lifting (up to 44 lbs.), carrying objects (up to 15 lbs.), frequent reaching, walking, standing (up to 8 hours), bending, and climbing.
  • Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity are required.
  • Must be capable of working in stressful situations and shifting priorities based on patient needs.
  • Annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening, must be completed as a condition of employment.

Education

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution. Approved schools include:
  • Schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Schools approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
  • Foreign Medical Graduates: Must provide proof of certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
