Overview: Physical Science Technician (GS-04 to GS-06)

Salary Range by Grade Level:

  • GS-04: $45,885 – $59,657
  • GS-05: $51,336 – $66,731
  • GS-06: $57,226 – $74,391

Position Duties:

As a Physical Science Technician, you will:

  • Support overhaul and refueling of nuclear-powered vessels.
  • Ensure compliance with radiological safety protocols across multi-disciplinary operations.
  • Represent radiological control during planning and mock-up sessions for major shipyard tasks.
  • Participate in radiation survey implementation and incident prevention efforts.
  • Apply knowledge of shipyard layouts, containment systems, safety equipment, and radiological monitoring tools.

Qualification Requirements:

GS-04:

  • 1 year of experience at the GS-03 level or equivalent, assisting in health physics procedures and radiological safety monitoring.
  • OR 2 years of post-high school education, including 12 semester hours in relevant physical sciences or engineering.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

GS-05:

  • 1 year of specialized experience at GS-04 level in radiological safety, reporting deficiencies, and supporting incident control.
  • OR a 4-year degree in physical sciences or related fields (at least 24 semester hours of physical science, math, or engineering).
  • OR a combination of education and experience.

GS-06:

  • 1 year of specialized experience at GS-05 level applying radiological protocols, planning containment strategies, and monitoring radiation zones.
  • OR 9 semester hours of graduate-level education directly related to the position.

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements:

  • Work in shipyards, dry docks, and confined spaces.
  • Exposure to physical and chemical hazards (radiation, fumes, chemicals).
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for the entire shift.
  • May involve climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., crouching, or working at heights or in cramped areas.
  • Subject to rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency overtime.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical and maintain eligibility for a security clearance.

Additional Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Participation in direct deposit program is mandatory.
  • Subject to E-Verify employment verification.
  • May require travel within CONUS/OCONUS using commercial and military aircraft.
