Summary
This is a public notice flyer to inform potential applicants of upcoming vacancies for mechanical engineering positions within the Department of the Navy. Key Duties
As a Mechanical Engineer, your responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing and approving contractor engineering drawings and technical documents.
- Preparing and evaluating specifications for the fabrication and assembly of spare and repair parts.
- Establishing and prescribing testing methods and equipment for performance and lifecycle testing.
- Assessing reliability data to identify engineering design flaws or performance issues.
- Reviewing contractor requests for deviations, alternate parts, or substitute assemblies.

- Travel may be required, including to CONUS/OCONUS or remote sites via commercial or military aircraft

Qualifications
To qualify, your resume must demonstrate specialized experience or equivalent education for each grade level:
- GS-07: One year of experience at GS-05 applying basic mechanical engineering concepts (e.g., assisting in mechanical system design).
- GS-09: One year of experience at GS-07 applying principles in the operation or maintenance of naval shipboard weapons systems.
- GS-11: One year of experience at GS-09 evaluating engineering plans for shipboard mechanical systems to identify logistical or design issues.
- GS-12: One year of experience at GS-11 evaluating complex shipboard equipment and systems for reliability and maintenance considerations.
Full qualification standards:
OPM Mechanical Engineering Series (0830)
Experience may include paid or unpaid work such as internships, volunteer work, or service programs.
Education Requirements
You must have a degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution or meet OPM qualification standards through an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Acceptable alternatives include:
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or PE licensure
- Successful completion of the FE exam
- Relevant coursework and experience in physics, chemistry, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, etc.
- A related degree with 1+ year of supervised professional engineering experience

- Recruitment is under the Science and Technology Reinvention Laboratory (STRL) Direct Hire Authority
- Multiple positions may be filled
- This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program
