Department of the Navy – Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR)

Position Overview

As a Project/Program Engineer, you will:

  • Apply advanced engineering principles in electro-optics, infrared, lasers, and quantum sensing.
  • Assist in developing engineering and statistical models to assess risks and optimize system performance.
  • Analyze and interpret technical data using tools such as signal processing, image analysis, and target detection algorithms.
  • Deliver engineering solutions that balance performance, cost, and schedule constraints.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience (GS-12 level equivalent):
Your resume must demonstrate one year of experience in the following:

  1. Applying knowledge in EO/IR, lasers, and quantum sensing for program support.
  2. Communicating technical information through writing, problem-solving, and resolution.
  3. Using data/image analysis for detection, ranging, and tracking algorithms.
  4. Assessing sensor performance using SNR and MTF (Signal to Noise Ratio and Modulation Transfer Function).

Basic Education Requirements (based on occupational series):

For Engineers (0830/0854/0855):

  • A degree in professional engineering from an ABET-accredited program; or
  • A combination of education, licensing (e.g., PE, EIT), and professional engineering experience.

For Physicists (1310):

  • A degree in physics or a related field with at least 24 semester hours in physics.

For Computer Scientists (1550):

  • A degree in computer science or equivalent with 30 hours in math, statistics, and computer science (15 hours must include calculus and statistics).

Foreign education must be validated by a recognized U.S. credential evaluation agency.


Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
  • Subject to drug testing and random testing after hiring.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • May require CONUS/OCONUS travel and use of military/commercial aircraft.
  • Must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce (DAWIA) certification requirements.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
