Position Overview:

This opportunity is for entry-level Industrial Hygienists (GS-0690) and Chemical Engineers (GS-0893) with the Department of the Navy. Selected individuals will play a key role in safeguarding health and safety by identifying and mitigating occupational hazards in shipyard and industrial environments.


Primary Duties:

  • Analyze accident and injury reports to identify trends and root causes and recommend hazard mitigation strategies.
  • Apply industrial hygiene practices to manage health risks in shipyard operations.
  • Review and provide technical input on policies and procedures (e.g., Uniform Industrial Process Instructions).
  • Represent PSNS in meetings with military and civilian personnel, including external stakeholders (e.g., OPNA V, NAVSEA).
  • Process, review, and analyze program data to ensure accuracy and clarity in reports provided to other departments.

Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Registration for Selective Service (for males born after 12/31/1959).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • Participation in direct deposit.
  • Willingness to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and areas with hazardous materials.
  • Travel may be required (CONUS and OCONUS).
  • Position is subject to medical surveillance due to exposure risks.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications:

For GS-07 (Industrial Hygienist/Chemical Engineer):

You may qualify based on:

  1. Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 level in assessing health hazards in industrial settings.
  2. Education:
    • One year of graduate-level education in a related field, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement, OR
    • Combination of education and experience.

Basic Requirements by Series:

Industrial Hygiene (GS-0690):
  • A bachelor’s or higher degree in:
    • Industrial hygiene, occupational/environmental health, toxicology, or related sciences, OR
    • Physical/life sciences or engineering with 12 semester hours in chemistry (including organic) + 18 additional hours in qualifying science/health subjects, OR
    • Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
Chemical Engineering (GS-0893):
  • A degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, OR
  • A combination of education and experience that meets OPM’s engineering qualification standards, such as:
    • Professional registration (e.g., PE, EIT),
    • FE exam passage,
    • Appropriate academic coursework,
    • Related degrees with at least one year of supervised engineering experience.
Additional (per SECNAVINST 5100.16C):
  • Minimum 30 credits of lab sciences,
    • Including 2 semesters of general inorganic chemistry (with lab),
    • 1 semester of organic chemistry (with lab),
    • Remaining credits from physics, engineering, toxicology, biology, etc.

Additional Information:

  • Direct Hire Authority under the Defense Industrial Base program is being used to fill these roles.
  • Multiple positions may be filled at different grade levels.
  • This position may require working nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Promotions may be available but are not guaranteed.
  • Veterans’ preference does not apply under this hiring authority.
