Summary: Health Physicist

Agency: Department of the Navy
Location: Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility

As a Health Physicist, you will be responsible for ensuring radiological safety and compliance within the Navy’s operations. Your work will directly support the Navy’s mission by identifying, evaluating, and mitigating radiation hazards in shipyard environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze radiation survey data to assess risks and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Conduct inspections and surveillance activities related to radiological safety programs.
  • Investigate personnel dosimetry results, evaluate radiation exposures, and recommend improvements.
  • Perform statistical analyses and track trends in radiation safety and health data.
  • Develop reports and assist in improving procedures and compliance measures.
  • Utilize and support the development of computer-based tools related to health physics.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement (All Grades):

  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in natural science or engineering that includes at least 30 semester hours in relevant subjects (e.g., health physics, physics, chemistry, biology, calculus),
    OR
  • A combination of education and experience, or certification by the American Board of Health Physics with equivalent knowledge.

For GS-05:

  • Meeting the basic education requirement qualifies you for this level.

For GS-07:

  • One year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level (or equivalent) such as assisting with radiation investigations, data collection, and report preparation,
    OR
  • Completion of one full year of graduate-level education in a qualifying field,
    OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement,
    OR
  • A combination of education and experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Must pass a background check and obtain/maintain a security clearance
  • Subject to medical screening and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • May be required to work in hazardous environments and during nights, weekends, or holidays
  • Must comply with Selective Service registration (for males born after 12/31/1959)
