Overview:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is hiring General Engineers under Direct Hire Authority. These roles are available across multiple FAA organizations and locations. This position supports complex engineering functions related to the National Airspace System (NAS) and other FAA missions. The work includes multidisciplinary engineering efforts that are not confined to one specific engineering specialty.

Position Highlights:

As a General Engineer, you will:

  • Provide professional engineering expertise in areas that intersect multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Apply knowledge in material strength, stress analysis, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical circuits, materials science, and related fields.
  • Evaluate, improve, or implement systems, structures, and equipment within the FAA’s mission.
  • Potentially oversee or support system integration, project development, and operational analysis.

Pay Bands Available:

FV-G through FV-K (Equivalent to GS-5 through GS-15)

Note: Positions may be filled at any of these levels depending on applicant qualifications and agency needs.


Qualifications:

Basic Education Requirement (All Grades):

  • Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; or
  • A combination of education and experience that provides:
    • A solid foundation in math and physical sciences, and
    • A good understanding of engineering sciences and applications.

Grade-Specific Qualifications:

FV-G:

  • Meet basic education requirements.

FV-H:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-G (GS 5/7/9).
  • Examples: Reviewing design documents, assisting in system analysis, using engineering tools/software.

OR

  • 3 years of graduate-level education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
    OR
  • Combination of education and experience.

FV-I:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H (GS 11/12).
  • Examples: Statistical analysis, quality control, or noise abatement studies.

FV-J:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I (GS 13).
  • Examples: System performance evaluation, fault analysis, program implementation.

FV-K:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-J (GS 14).
  • Examples: Overseeing engineering systems, managing technical integration projects, acceptance testing.

Education Requirements:

  • Transcripts are required for all applicants who have never served in an 0800 engineering position within the FAA.
  • Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service
  • A security background investigation may be required
  • One-year probationary period may apply
  • A pre-employment physical may be required
  • This position may be subject to drug/alcohol testing
