Job Summary:
The Department of the Navy is seeking qualified candidates for an Engineer/Scientist position within the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Long Range Fires (LRF) Safety Engineer/Scientist, your primary duties will include:
- Supporting the LRF capability development by performing safety engineering tasks for systems such as Naval Platforms, Combat Systems, and Weapons.
- Collaborating with various stakeholders, including Navy management, DoD agencies, private industry, and academic partners.
- Conducting hazard analysis and safety risk assessments at both the System of Systems (SoS) and integrated weapons control system levels.
- Developing, implementing, and tracking systems safety engineering plans, risk assessments, and related documents.
- Leading safety engineering activities across the LRF lifecycle, from research and development to operations, ensuring all stages are covered by comprehensive safety assessments.
- Participating in technical reviews of safety program artifacts and advising on system safety-related decisions.
- Coordinating and assisting in the preparation of safety-related research proposals and reports.
- Monitoring technical risks and applying risk management concepts to ensure project goals are met on time and within budget.
- Providing expert safety engineering advice to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Participating in Safety Review Boards and program certification panels.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- ND-4 Level (GS-12/13 equivalent): At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-3 level (GS-9 through GS-11). This experience must demonstrate your ability to apply professional safety engineering principles to control hazardous conditions.
- ND-3 Level (GS-9/11 equivalent): At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-2 level (GS-5 through GS-8). This experience must involve applying basic safety engineering techniques to analyze and control hazardous conditions.
Educational Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following educational qualifications:
- Professional Engineering Series (08XX): A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution, or a degree in an engineering-related field with coursework in key engineering subjects.
- Physics (1310): A degree in physics or related field with sufficient coursework.
- Chemistry (1320): A degree in chemistry or related field with additional coursework in physics and mathematics.
- Operations Research (1515): A degree in operations research or related field with relevant coursework.
- Mathematics (1520): A degree in mathematics or related field with advanced mathematical coursework.
- Computer Science (1550): A degree in computer science or a related field with coursework in mathematics and statistics.
Certifications and Security Clearance:
- This position requires a Top Secret security clearance and the successful completion of a pre-employment drug test, including random drug testing.
- Applicants must obtain certification under the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) within specified timeframes.
