Summary – Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal Division)

Join one of the nation’s largest and busiest U.S. Attorney’s Offices, serving over 8.3 million residents across 43 counties and 44,000 square miles in the Southern District of Texas. As an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Criminal Division of the Brownsville Office, you will:

  • Prosecute a broad range of federal crimes, including cases involving organized crime, narcotics trafficking, firearms, immigration, white-collar offenses, public corruption, asset forfeiture, and more.
  • Collaborate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Appear regularly in federal court and manage a fast-paced and diverse caseload.
  • Help further the DOJ’s mission to enforce federal laws and promote justice with integrity and fairness.

This role is ideal for attorneys seeking meaningful, challenging work in a supportive team of public service professionals. First consideration will be given to applications submitted by April 8, 2025, but the applicant list will be reviewed every 30 days until the closing date.


Qualifications

Required:

  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the bar of any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of one year of post-J.D. legal experience.

Preferred:

  • Strong academic background, superior legal writing and analytical skills.
  • Significant courtroom or litigation experience (first-chair jury trials preferred).
  • Experience in criminal investigations, grand jury practice, or prosecution/defense of federal offenses.
  • Professionalism, ethics, and a demonstrated commitment to public service.

Additional Information

  • Location: Brownsville, Texas (must live in or within 25 miles of the district)
  • Type: Full-time, initial 14-month appointment, with potential for extension or conversion.
  • Salary Range: $73,939 – $195,100 (includes 17.06% locality pay; based on experience).
  • Travel: Occasional (1–5 nights per month).
  • Benefits: Federal benefits package including health, life, and retirement plans, paid leave, and more.
  • Relocation Expenses: Not authorized.
