Everyone has been buzzing about the role of Mance Rayder on Game of Thrones—and after a long search, the crew finally found the right guy for the job.
He’s Irish actors Ciaran Hinds, who’s known for his roles in Rome, Road To Perdition, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
The character of Mance Rayder is the Wildling leader, who’s been referenced a ton throughout the series, but we’ve never actually met him.
Mance is responsible for uniting the clans of the Far North to ultimately attack The Wall that’s being protected by the Night’s Watch.
Mance will come face to face with Jon Snow in season 3, who as you remember in the season 2 finale, is being taken to meet him.
So here’s what I wanna know: do you think Ciaran Hinds is the right guy to play Mance Rayder, or would you have preferred to see a different actor?

  1. Ciaran Hinds is a terrifc actor. He played in Shakespeare dramas, and i have seen how he acts…it's spectacular. He is way too food for Game of thrones

  2. i imagined manke as the right hand of king leoniad from 300. but i hope that ciaran wil lmake a graet job. i found the 1st episode nice though. he just shouldt be like that grimmy looking. he is a bard i mean

  3. I think he will be great. Never saw him on screen. I just like what I have seen from the trailers. This mance Rayder seems very different from the one in the books. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do.

  4. Not too old-here's the description from the book:
Mance is a big man, long legged and lean, broad in the chest and shoulders. His once long brown hair is now gone mostly grey, laughter lines appear at the corner of his mouth. He has a sharp face and shrewd brown eyes.He is an unremarkable-looking man in his middle years, with a fondness for music

  5. Ciaran Hinds is amazing and I can't wait to see him in this role, however the Mance Rayder in the books doesn't fit hinds. The TV version of the King-Beyond-the-Wall will be much harder and less friendly than the book version. I wouldn't expect a song out of him.

  8. Hail Caesar!
Oh wait wrong programme. He'll be absolutely awesome as it. Although I probably imagined him younger, he's possibly the best guy I could imagine him doing it.

    Maybe bar Di Caprio.

  9. Well, we have to keep in mind that this is a fantasy franchise. The targaryens has silver hair and lilac eyes for gods sake. Lets be honest, Eddard found out about Joffrey being a result of incest because of non-matching hair colours. Not so believable, ive got to say. The Lannisters come from the Andals and The Starks come from the first men. Yes, there are differences, but it is a fantasy book. England and Scandinavia doesnt exist there, only the 7 kingdoms. It wouldnt make sense biologically.

  10. No the Lannisters are Nordic looking, tall, blonde, light eyed, etc, basically Hitler's wet dream. The Starks and all the people of the North are Celtic looking, dark hair – red, dark brown, dirty blonde, black, etc. They also have pale skin and light eyes. Basically British looking. Just look at the Starks, they mostly have dark hair, average height, pale skin, etc. Look at the Lannisters then look at the Starks, and you'll see the difference.

  11. What has religion to do with anything? You don't look a certain way just because of your religion. Jason Isaacs looks nordic, even though he's a jew. To me, Ciaran looks more spanish/italian/french. I love his acting though, i'm not saying it's a bad thing. I like the casting of Mance Rayder, maybe just not what i invisioned it to be, but it could've been much worse. 🙂

  12. The starks are nordic looking. Think about the scandinavian vikings, they're known for being fair skinned, having blue eyes, blonde/brown hair and muscles, same as the starks and the wildlings. To me, Ciaran looks more italian, spanish or of french heritage. I think it's because he played Caesar in Rome, and he was really the perfect italian boss 😛 I actually think the casting is good, but maybe just not as i invisioned.

  13. Jason Isaacs is Jewish (not meaning to be anti-semitic, but in the strictest sense of the word they are not exactly nordic) Ciaran is a celt and perfect for the role! (Albeit, a celt of the 'black irish' variety)

  14. i almost never do this but all caps is warranted. CIARAN HINDS IS THE BEST ACTOR OF OUR GENERATION, and he's perfect to be in the best fantasy tale of our time…hbo strikes again!

  15. They haven't changed Mance. He's definetily middle aged in the books, since he has greying hair. George R.R. Martin says he approves of the casting, because he was a big fan of Ciaran's performance as Julius Caesar in Rome. He also said that some readers assume Mance is younger since he's about to become a father for the first time. But he's significantly older than his wife Dalla. Ciaran's a great actor and I'm certain he'll pull this off. Don't know what you meant by that "healthy" comment.
