Furlough end could see ‘1M jobs go’ as Trump’s Remdesivir grab sparks fury and deaths hit 43,730

A MILLION people could be jobless in six weeks, as the furlough scheme begins to come to an end, warned Martin Lewis.

The Money Saving Expert fears “hundreds of thousands of people, possibly a million” workers face redundancy within weeks.

Today, furloughed workers finally started returning to work part-time – as the Government begins to wind down the ‘lifeline’ scheme.

Firms will be able to decide which employees they bring back and what hours they do, while paying the wages for the time they work.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “The furlough scheme, which will have been open for eight months by October, has been a lifeline for millions of people.”

Meanwhile, Trump has come under fire after the US bought up virtually all worldwide stocks of Remdesivir, a drug shown to work against Covid-19.

Now, the coronavirus death toll in the UK stands at 43,730 and the global toll reaches half a million.
