Please submit your and an HR Representative will contact you.Description:Job Summary:Under the direction and supervision of the physician or nurse assists in examination and treatment of patients. Duties and tasks of the ED Tech will vary depending upon the needs of the patients within the department. The ED Tech will provide patient care for all ages, acuities and conditions in the population the facility serves, including ensuring age-specific care and responding to cultural needs of patients and families. The ED Tech must establish priorities based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment, and supplies. Duties include documentation of patient care and unit activities in a timely, accurate, and concise manner.Essential Responsibilities:
- Patient Care: Â In addition to the ED Tech I duties, The ED Tech II duties and tasks may include the following and must maintain necessary competencies: Â Application of urinary leg bag to existing Foley catheter. Â Applies nasal cannula, simple mask, and non-rebreather mask. Â Applies orthopedic devices, pre-formed splints, performs splinting, cast removal and crutch fitting/teaching. Â Assist with log rolling, applies cervical collar as directed. Â Assists in emergency situations, including resuscitation. Â Assists patients to/from bathroom, ambulation, and transports using principal body mechanics to prevent injury. Â Assists physician with pelvic exam. Â Assists with discharge process, reinforcing discharge teaching provided by the nurse or physician. Â Assists with procedures, including positioning, draping and prepping, maintaining sterile field. Â Cardiac monitor surveillance, recognizing, recording and reporting potentially dangerous rhythm changes and arrhythmias in accordance with established standards and procedures. Â Cleaning of ED stretchers, equipment and rooms; preparing care areas for patient arrival. Â Demonstrate effective use of supplies and equipment; reporting needed repairs. Â Discontinuation of indwelling Foley catheters as directed by nurse or physician. Â Distribution of linens and supplies in patient care areas, specialty carts, and ante-rooms, reporting off to on coming shift of department needs. Â Documentation of intake and output in the medical record. Â Inventories patient belonging and document accordingly in the health record. Â Look up Lab results on computer as directed by physician or nurse. Â Maintain a safe environment for all patients, including those with altered mental status, confusion, or in a psychiatric emergency, providing and documenting direct observation as directed by the nurse. Â Obtain pertinent patient information; accurately IDENTIFY patients; DETERMINE specimen requirements and COLLECT patient sample using appropriate process of venipuncture or capillary collection based on patient age and/or condition after demonstrated competency. Â Obtains, records and reports vital signs, heights, weights and inputs/outputs of patients and reports any unusual findings to the primary RN or physician. Â Perform Bladder Scanning and document accordingly in the health record. Â Perform wound preparation for physician assessment and application of simple dressings as directed by the physician. Â Performing ECGs. Â Performs point of care testing (POCT) & Performs POCT quality control checks. Provides chaperoning as needed for sensitive exams. Â Provides comfort measures such as blankets, pillows and repositioning. Â Provides post-mortem care. Â Removal of intravenous catheter as directed by physician or nurse and document accordingly in the health record. Â Rooms patients, undresses patients and applies monitoring devices. Â Serve patient meals and feed patients when assistance is needed. Â Straight catheter (mini-cath), in and out of female adults >12 years.
- Customer Service/Quality: Â Ability to provide excellent customer service, greet patients, and to properly fill out paperwork as well as following the correct procedure for identifying patients. Â Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights, cultural and ethical beliefs. Â Establishes effective working relationships with members of the health care team, patients, and families. Acknowledges staff rights and cultural and ethical beliefs. Â Performs within the scope and training of the ED Tech, and consistent State/Federal regulations including EMTALA, HIPAA and other applicable regulations, including patient confidentiality and risk management. Â In interactions with patients, members, and others, focuses on resolving conflict in a blame-free environment; maintains confidentiality; listens to others without interrupting, maintains self-control; remains open to others ideas and tries new things. Demonstrated skills in management of aggressive behaviors, including de-escalation techniques. Â Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; actively listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; participates in meetings. Â Communicates effectively in critical situations. Â Documentation adheres to medical center policies and procedures and complies with all regulatory requirements. Â Looks for ways to improve and promote quality; demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness. Â Supports department and facility Quality programs.
- Safety: Â To be able to demonstrate proper body mechanics when transporting patients to the floor, or another department. Also use of proper lift techniques in certain circumstances. Â Maintains proficiency in the care of special populations such as, but not limited to, victims of abuse, hazmat patients. Â Complies with Patient Safety Standards and actively participates in Workplace Safety Initiatives. Â Maintains a safe work environment.
- Teamwork: Â Acts as a preceptor/resource for new employees. Â Participates in ED staff meetings, in-services, and performance improvement activities. Â Assesses own strengths and weaknesses, pursues training and development opportunities; strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; shares expertise with others. Basic Qualifications:Experience
- Minimum one (1) year patient care experience in an acute care or prehospital.
- Completion of an Accredited Phlebotomy Program which includes successful completion of an experience practicum OR 18 months of phlebotomy experience within the previous five (5) years in a multi-patient clinical laboratory.
Education
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
License, Certification, Registration
- Basic Life Support required at hire
Additional Requirements:
- ED Tech II position is only available to internal applicants currently in the ED Tech I role and who sign the attestation form.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology, application of dressing and splints, basic patient care procedures.
- Effective communication skills, verbal, written and listening.
- Ability to prioritize work, manage time and optimize department flow.
- Thorough understanding of phlebotomy principles and techniques and phlebotomy equipment.
- Thorough understanding of sample collection requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One (1) year of recent emergency department technician experience
- Cardiac rhythm identification (telemetry)
- Six (6) months related experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant II, or equivalent (e.g. military experience), Medical Assistant with experience in Urgency Care setting or completion of first semester of clinical course work in a nursing program.
- National Phlebotomy Certification.
