Responsibilities
Reports directly to a Vice Chair of Strategy. Works collaboratively across the Strategy Department, with multidisciplinary teams throughout Mayo Clinic and external entities. Represents the Strategy Department as a delegate at high-level meetings and events.
The Director of Health Policy will play a key leadership role in advancing the organization’s health policy priorities through analysis, advocacy, and strategic engagement. The Director will manage a portfolio of policy issues, oversee policy research and development, develop recommendations on complex business, legal and regulatory issues, and support high-level internal and external initiatives to shape the healthcare landscape at the state and federal level. This position requires strong policy acumen, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. The individual in this role exemplifies behaviors associated with high-performing teams, including positive teamwork, transparency, communication, engagement, diversity of thought, and a continuous improvement mindset.
This role demands a strategic and analytical thinker with exceptional leadership skills, profound health industry knowledge, and a proven track record in health policy. The Director of Health Policy is a thought leader in developing innovative solutions to key strategic and operational issues, presenting recommendations to senior leaders, challenging the status quo, and implementing solutions and programs to advance departmental and organizational priorities. They will provide strategic direction for the health policy function, ensuring policy efforts are integrated into enterprise strategy and external engagement priorities, and oversee and lead teams, ensuring high-quality deliverables and capability development.
The Director of Health Policy will be a trusted adviser to senior leaders and key stakeholders, providing insights and recommendations that drive business success while ensuring their strategic needs are understood and met. Excellence in financial management, communication (verbal, written, and presentations), business and strategic planning, performance monitoring, and reporting is essential. The Director of Health Policy also maintains accountability for external reputation management and advancing key policy initiatives.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience; or an advanced degree in public policy, health administration, public health or other relevant advanced degree (e.g., PhD, JD, MBA) and at least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in health policy, consulting, government affairs, strategy, or a related field within a complex healthcare, academic, professional advisory or governmental environment.
Additional Experience and/or Qualifications:
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Five years of people leadership experience preferred.
- Resilient change agent comfortable thriving in ambiguity. Capable of working autonomously with minimal direction and under pressure.
- Proven ability to successfully undertake and execute multiple large and complex initiatives simultaneously.
- Demonstrated track record of influencing public policy, regulatory reform, or health system transformation.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and drive health policy strategies aligned with organizational priorities.
- Deep understanding of federal and state healthcare policy, payment models, and regulatory frameworks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to distill complex policy issues for diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and work collaboratively across disciplines.
- Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience working within or with academic medical centers, integrated health systems, or public policy think tanks.
- Experience representing an organization in external policy discussions, advocacy initiatives, or coalition-building efforts.
- Established relationships with policymakers, agencies, and industry leaders.

Compensation Detail
$160,076.80 – $232,107.20 / year. Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
