Responsibilities
The Senior Director, Science Content, inspires principal and transformational gifts for Mayo Clinic’s top priorities by conveying complex biomedical topics and “big ideas” for healthcare transformation in compelling ways. As a member of the Development Communications team, this role leads creation of science-driven fundraising content across benefactor qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, while also editing peer content and bolstering the team’s overall science writing acumen. Across all domains, the Senior Director demonstrates exceptional written and oral communication skills and expert-level knowledge of building effective multichannel communications and engagement strategies. Content deliverables range from high touch to highly scalable and may include benefactor proposals, impact reports, magazine articles, multimedia assets, leadership remarks and correspondences, and other emerging needs.
The Senior Director develops a deep understanding of Mayo Clinic’s mission, strategic plan and fundraising priorities to inform content strategies and skillfully engages partners throughout the organization to align deliverables to business objectives. This includes building meaningful relationships with Mayo Clinic’s priority leaders and world-class experts to craft persuasive philanthropic cases that demonstrate how Mayo’s model of research is differentiated and poised to solve unmet patient needs. In addition, the Senior Director applies their subject matter expertise to advance Development business objectives in collaboration with Mayo Clinic executive leadership, fundraising professionals, functional Development programs and staff in adjacent departments, such as Communications, Marketing and the Executive Office.
The Senior Director leads through influence and manages complex and cross-functional projects through entire project life cycle to achieve objectives and measurable results. Proactively seeks opportunities to build and improve positive relationships with colleagues, leaders and experts. Conveys confidence, clarity and transparency in communications with stakeholders and leaders. Mentors peers and may direct work of other partners, including agencies, contractors and third parties.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 7 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a field such as biomedical research, health care, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals or life sciences; or a Master’s degree plus 5 years of relevant work experience. Experience working in an academic medical center and/or nonprofit fundraising organization is strongly preferred, as well as experience coaching and editing work of other writers
