We are seeking to make Chair and Lecturer appointments at the interface of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Your research interests will include the development and application of statistical or machine learning methodology to support and enhance the mathematical modelling of physical and/or natural systems. You will have expertise in at least one of: data science; machine learning; uncertainty quantification for mathematical models; Bayesian statistics. For a Chair position you would be expected to show leadership in developing initiatives that draw together statisticians and mathematical modellers from different disciplines, as well as taking on leadership roles within the School. You should be committed to delivering high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and will be required to supervise MSc dissertations on statistical topics.
Applied Mathematics research is organised within clusters. These are: fluid dynamics; gravitation and cosmology; mathematical biology and environmental dynamics, solar physics and plasma dynamics. There is a single statistics research cluster with a range of research interests, including: the development and application of statistical methods for archaeology, ecology, environmental science, genetic epidemiology, geology and materials science; expert knowledge elicitation; image analysis; time series analysis; uncertainty quantification for complex mathematical models. There is a strong research ethos and an international reputation in research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 89% of our submission was judged to be either international excellent or world leading
You should have a PhD in a relevant area and willingness to support and empower individuals from under-represented groups in mathematics and statistics. For a Chair position you would have a record of securing external grant income
