Job description: Qualifications: Please read carefully and ensure you meet qualifications before submitting your application.

  • Preferred: Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction or Doctorate in Instructional Leadership or Doctorate in Learning and Teaching or Doctorate in Teaching Innovation or Doctorate in Literacy or Doctorate in Reading or related field AND valid state teacher certification.
  • Minimum: Masters in Reading or Masters in Literacy or Masters in Curriculum in Instruction or related field AND a valid state teacher certification in literacy/reading or a valid state teacher certification in elementary or secondary education with an endorsement in literacy/reading AND exceptional expertise to include a minimum of two items from the following criteria:
  • 1. Is enrolled in a terminal/doctoral degree program with a minimum of 18 credits successfully completed.
  • 2. Has minimum of 4 years experience as a board member on two or more boards related to content areas.
  • 3. Has been recognized with two or more awards for their expertise in content area.
  • 4. Has over 3 publications in peer reviewed journals within the last 7 years.
  • 5. Holds a minimum of 4 years experience in leadership position within their respective professional association.
  • 6. Have a minimum of 10 years of work experience in the field for which they would be assigned a course.
  • 7. Hold certifications in their respective content area above and beyond degree credentials.
  • 8. Holds or has held a position as a director or higher in the work setting for a minimum of 8 years in the area related to the course.
  • All instructors must have a minimum of three years of experience as a classroom teacher or reading specialist or literacy curriculum coach or Title One reading teacher or RTI interventionist or related position AND At least six graduate level credit hours related to reading assessments or equivalent.

This advanced study of assessment information is used to plan and evaluate curriculum and instruction at the building and district level. In addition, the reading/literacy specialist candidates communicate assessment results to a variety of audiences.”REA-520: Introductory Instructional Methods for Elementary Reading and Writing“Reading/Literacy specialist candidates survey instructional approaches and materials that support student learning in reading and writing. This survey prepares the reading/literacy specialist candidates to design an integrated, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum.”REA-532: Advanced Methods for K-12 Reading and Writing Instruction and Remediation“Reading/Literacy specialist candidates engage in advanced studies of instructional approaches and materials to support reading and writing instruction and remediation across content areas. From this advanced study, the reading/literacy specialist candidates design an integrated, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum to meet the diverse literacy needs of individuals and groups of students including students identified as English language learners or demonstrating signs of dyslexia.”REA-545: Advanced Studies in Methods for Secondary Content Reading and Writing“Reading specialist/literacy coach candidates engage in advanced studies of instructional approaches and materials at the building and district level that support secondary students’ learning in reading and writing across content areas. From this advanced study, the reading specialist/literacy coach candidates design an integrated, comprehensive, and balanced curriculum.”REA-552: Leadership in Literacy Intervention and Remediation“Reading/Literacy specialist candidates survey professional learning and leadership models for promoting literacy with emphasis on positive dispositions, individual and collaborative learning, design and evaluation of professional learning experiences, the importance of advocacy, and a need for knowledge about adult learning and school leadership. From this survey, reading/literacy specialist candidates demonstrate and facilitate professional learning and leadership as a career-long effort and responsibility.”REA-582: Practicum in K-12 Reading“The practicum experience requires reading/literacy specialist candidates to implement literacy instruction, intervention and remediation that is designed to meet the specific needs of students and engage in research and analysis to support compilation and creation of a Literacy Work Sample (LWS). In addition, the candidates provide support to other teachers to think reflectively about improving student learning and implementing various instructional practices.”Responsibilities:Responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, facilitating classroom discussions, assessing student performance, and preparing students to be successful leaders in their chosen profession. Other main responsibilities include the following:

  • Facilitate weekly main discussion forums to engage students in the online classroom.
  • Adhere to weekly grading requirements, deadlines, and timeframes.
  • Respond to students’ questions and emails within the established timeframes.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
