Duties
This is being announced at multiple grade levels; duties listed below will be Firefighter performed in a developmental capacity at the GS-05, and GS-06 grade levels. At the full performance, GS-07, the incumbent will:
Responds to fire alarms for all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations; wild land fires, hazardous material incidents, and aircraft emergencies.
Use firefighting equipment to include hoses, ladders, hydrants, firefighting vehicles, etc. to control the incident.
Serve as a first responder to medical emergencies and perform medical procedures that are noninvasive.
Incumbent must be able to analyze a hazardous materials incident to determine the magnitude of Firefighter the problem in terms of outcome, survey the hazardous materials incident to identify special containers involved.
Identify or classify unknown materials, and verify the presence or concentrations of hazardous materials through the use of monitoring equipment.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
This position requires that the incumbent work up to 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Firefighter Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements.
Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
Must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State’s driver’s license.
Must be able obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Certification.
Must complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
Must maintain a functioning telephone to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
Position designated Mission Essential, required to report for duty during inclement weather, naturalFirefighter disasters, and other emergency situations.
Must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Must be able to lift heavy objects of 50 pounds.
GS-0081 is a primary/rigorous position a pre-employment physical is required; you must successfully complete the pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position

Specialized Experience for GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for thisFirefighter position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
Specialized Experience for GS-6 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; AND (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the Firefighter qualification requirement using experience alone — no substitution of education for experience is permitted for GS-06 level.
Specialized Experience for GS-7 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention; AND (7) providing emergency care and basic life support to patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone — no substitution of education for experience is permitted at GS-07 level.
