Responsibilities
The Paralegal plays a vital role in providing guidance and assistance to voting/consulting staff, allied health staff, attorneys, paraprofessionals, and other parties, both internally and externally, in responding to and resolving legal matters affecting Mayo Clinic. The Paralegal requires effective management of a large and diversified workload, strong decision-making capabilities, a high level of independent judgment, and a profound understanding of the organization and its business needs. Under general direction, the Paralegal completes work at an advanced level, with limited attorney revision. Subject matter areas of support include litigation, business law, employment law and health law.
Specific duties may vary based on departmental and organizational needs and may include, but are not limited to, conducting research and analyzing statutes and regulations, conducting interviews and investigations, leading meetings with internal staff, clients and external parties, collecting and summarizing documentation, organizing legal cases or files, drafting communications and other legal documents, process creation, conflict resolution, and other duties as necessary. Provides direction of work delegated to support staff. Serves on institutional committees and task forces in partnership with legal counsel.
The Paralegal in this position will primarily focus on employment law and immigration matters. Responsibilities will include responding to inquiries from Human Resources and a diverse group of Mayo Clinic personnel, providing guidance on performance management and corrective action, discrimination and retaliation, personnel file management, employment-related agreements, wage and hour issues, and non-attorney client privilege investigations, and preparation of immigration documentation, including petitions and applications. The Paralegal will serve as a subject matter expert on H-1B, J-1, TN, and E-3 regulatory concerns.

This position is primarily remote. However, this individual must live within driving distance from our AZ, FL, Rochester, MN, or Eau Claire, WI Mayo Clinic site.

Qualifications
The Paralegal position requires:
- Bachelor’s degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal educational program with 3 years relevant legal experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree and a paralegal certificate from an ABA certified program with 3 years relevant legal experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant legal experience; or
- a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree.
Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of laws, rules and regulations, and its processes. Possess strong problem-solving abilities, work collaboratively with legal staff, patients, consultants, allied health staff, and leadership. Proficiency in the English language, along with excellent writing and communication skills, is essential. Demonstrate exceptional organizational, and interpersonal relationship skills. Ingenuity, creativity, and self-motivation are needed to perform this job. Exhibit significant independent judgment with minimal direction and oversight, as well as excellent decision-making capabilities. Ability to self-direct, work independently, and manage multiple priorities is required in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to compose legal documents and demonstrate persuasion and negotiation skills. Exhibit competence in various technologies relevant to the role. Working knowledge of business, employment, health law and litigation practice areas is preferred.
