Summary

You will serve as a Physical Science Technician within the Radiological Waterfront Operations Manager and Radiological Refueling and Special Emphasis Manager (C105.3A/B) branch of the Radiological Monitoring Division (C105.3) at the Department of the Navy.

Note: Applicants will be considered only for positions within their current organizational code. For example, if you are part of Org Code 1053, you will only be eligible for positions within Org Code 1053.

🛠️ Duties

As a Physical Science Technician, you will:

  • Monitor radiological work: Provide continuous oversight of tasks involving radiological controls and radioactive materials to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and sound radiological practices.
  • Identify and address deficiencies: Detect, correct, and document unsafe or non-compliant work conditions to mitigate radiological risks.
  • Train and mentor: Deliver on-the-job guidance and coordinate training for junior radiological control technicians.
  • Plan and coordinate activities: Collaborate with other branches and production teams to ensure adequate radiological coverage and to review priorities and overlapping tasks.
  • Develop technical requirements: Provide input for radiological control measures, ensuring all work complies with regulatory standards.
  • Investigate and resolve issues: Analyze operational challenges, negotiate necessary adjustments, and establish conditions for safe implementation.
  • Minimize exposure and environmental impact: Oversee work practices to keep occupational exposure and environmental impacts within acceptable limits.

⚙️ Additional Details

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Conditions of employment include U.S. citizenship, suitability for federal employment, security clearance, participation in E-Verify, and compliance with Selective Service registration (if applicable).
  • You must pass a pre-appointment physical exam, wear required protective equipment, participate in medical surveillance, and may need to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Work may require nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and unusual duty hours to meet mission needs.

🎓 Qualifications

For GS-11:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level. This includes:

  • Using a range of radiological control instruments and survey techniques within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
  • Preparing comprehensive technical reports.
  • Responding to radiological emergencies, drills, and training exercises.
  • Applying health physics and quantitative measurements for assessing issues such as spills, waste disposal, effluent monitoring, or storage/handling of radioactive materials.
  • Preventing and controlling radiological incidents during complex operations.
  • Performing causal analysis of incidents and developing resolutions.

For GS-10:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level, including:

  • Responding to radiological emergencies and participating in training drills.
  • Using radiological control instrumentation and preparing technical reports.
  • Preventing and controlling radiological incidents during complex operations.
  • Completing causal analyses of incidents to recommend solutions.
