Summary
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) is seeking a Russian Language Teacher for the Undergraduate Russian School (URU) located at the Presidio of Monterey, California. DLIFLC provides intensive foreign language instruction year-round in over 13 languages. Courses run six hours per day, five days a week, excluding federal and training holidays.

Duties
- Deliver immersive, student-centered instruction in Russian, teaching listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
- Incorporate lessons on geopolitical, economic, and social topics relevant to the language and culture.
- Utilize technology in teaching, including Smart Boards, iPads, Internet resources, and tablet PCs.
- Organize course materials and data using computer skills.
- Stay current on foreign language teaching methods and theories.
Appointment Details
- Term appointment, not to exceed 36 months, with potential extensions based on mission and funding.
- Position filled at Senior Instructor level (AD-1701-03).
- May be offered adjunct temporary appointments based on budget or hiring constraints.
- One-year trial period may be required.
Qualifications
- Fluency in Russian and English (speaking, reading, writing) is required.
- Education:
- Master’s degree in any discipline, OR
- Bachelor’s degree plus one year of directly related experience in formal classroom language instruction (high school level or higher).
- Specialized experience includes classroom preparation, instruction, testing, tutoring, and counseling in a structured educational environment.
- Applicants must pass a language proficiency test (Oral Proficiency Interview) with minimum ILR Level 3 for Russian and Level 2 for English.
- Applicants must submit a 300-word handwritten essay in Russian, plus a 300-word handwritten English translation, describing how their background prepares them to teach a foreign language (typed essays are not accepted).
- Provide at least three professional references with names, titles, and contact information.
