Summary:

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a dedicated Rehabilitation Counselor to support Veterans facing significant physical, psychological, or psychosocial challenges that affect their employment, independence, or personal well-being. The counselor will provide evidence-based vocational and rehabilitation counseling to help Veterans overcome barriers and achieve meaningful goals in employment, education, and independent living.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide personal adjustment counseling, therapeutic interventions, and case coordination using evidence-informed practices.
  • Assist Veterans with severe disabilities in achieving employment, educational, and independent living goals.
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments using records, interviews, and observations.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care and develop individualized rehabilitation plans.
  • Offer employment services including job development, job coaching, and worksite accommodations.
  • Establish community partnerships and maintain employer relations to facilitate Veteran employment opportunities.
  • Deliver psychoeducational support and training on job-seeking, soft skills, and workplace readiness.
  • Monitor and evaluate Veterans’ progress and adjust services as needed.

Work Details:

  • Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Telework: Ad-hoc available
  • Remote Work: Not authorized
  • Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized
  • Physical Requirements: Primarily sedentary with occasional travel between work locations. Must be able to lift light objects (under 15 lbs).
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in vocational rehabilitation or substance use disorder treatment
    • Valid driver’s license

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Proficiency in English
  • Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling or related field (see full education criteria)
  • Certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) from the CRCC (or working toward certification under specific conditions)
  • Must pass a background check and pre-employment physical
  • Subject to vaccination requirements and selective service registration (if applicable)

Grade Levels:

  • GS-9: Entry-level; no additional experience required beyond education
  • GS-11: Requires 1 year of specialized experience at GS-9 level or a doctoral degree in a related field
