Overview
The FAA is seeking Electronics Engineers to support the National Airspace System (NAS). The position requires professional knowledge in engineering and mathematics, electronics theory, and systems analysis, with responsibilities focusing on the design, performance, and evaluation of electronic systems and equipment.
Work involves electromagnetic or acoustical wave energy or electrical information used for purposes such as:
- Communication
- Computation
- Sensing
- Control
- Measurement
- Navigation
Note: Positions may be filled at any grade level (FG-5 through FG-15), and duty locations may be negotiable upon request.
Basic Requirements
To qualify, candidates must meet the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements for the Engineering Series (0800):
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
OR - Combination of Education & Experience meeting OPM criteria, such as:
- Professional Engineering license (PE, EIT, or FE exam)
- Equivalent coursework with experience under a licensed engineer
- Related degrees in science or engineering with qualifying experience
Grade-Level Qualifications
FG-5: Meet basic education requirements.
FG-7:
- 1 year of graduate-level education or
- Superior academic achievement or
- 1 year of relevant experience (e.g., assisting engineers with testing and analysis of electronics systems)
FG-9:
- 2 years of graduate education or
- Master’s degree or
- 1 year of experience at FG-7 level (e.g., analyzing system performance, supporting special engineering projects)
FG-11:
- 3 years of graduate education or
- Ph.D. or
- 1 year of experience at FG-9 level (e.g., resolving issues in communication or navigation systems)
FG-12 and above:
- Progressive specialized experience in electronic systems analysis, testing, maintenance, operational engineering, and technical support for NAS systems.
- FG-13 and above includes leadership roles, policy development, national-level system support, and complex test strategy development.
