Summary – Geotechnical Engineer (Public Notice Flyer)
This is a public notice flyer to inform potential applicants of anticipated vacancies for Geotechnical Engineers. Applications will NOT be accepted through this flyer. To be considered for future openings, carefully review the “How to Apply” section below.
This flyer will serve as a candidate pool for upcoming vacancies. Actual positions may or may not be filled from this announcement.

Key Responsibilities
As a Geotechnical Engineer, you may be responsible for:
- Leading and conducting geotechnical design studies, analyses, and field investigations.
- Utilizing specialized software and engineering computation methods to solve complex problems.
- Preparing engineering reports, technical memorandums, and final design documents.
- Serving as a team lead for major engineering projects requiring innovative design solutions.
- Performing site visits to ensure design compliance and address construction-related issues.
- Advising other engineers and reviewing work products from Architect-Engineer (AE) firms.
- Supporting project planning through scheduling, cost estimation, and resource allocation.
- Assisting with regional programs including Dam Safety, Levee Safety, and Technical Reviews.
Qualifications
Grade GS-11 – Specialized experience includes:
- Reviewing geotechnical investigations and analyses.
- Supporting engineering design, plan reviews, and construction oversight.
- Assisting with project scheduling and resource planning.
(Typically performed at the GS-09 level)
Grade GS-12 – Specialized experience includes:
- Performing subsurface investigations and foundation analyses for levees, dams, and floodwalls.
- Utilizing borings and lab tests to evaluate stability, seepage, and settlement.
- Preparing technical design reports and supporting dam/levee safety inspections.
(Typically performed at the GS-11 level)
Basic Education Requirement (Civil Engineer 0810 Series)
You must meet one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or equivalent academic and professional combination as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards.
- Proof of licensure or registration (e.g., FE/EIT/PE) may satisfy education in certain cases.
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
Conditions of Employment
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- May require valid driver’s license.
- May require Professional Engineering (PE) license.
- Background check and suitability determination required.
- Some positions may require:
- Drug testing
- Travel or field work
- Physical activity (lifting, climbing, walking)
- Security clearance
Additional Information
- This position is being filled using the Direct Hire Authority (DHA) for certain DoD civilian positions.
- Multiple vacancies may be filled through this notice.
- Recruitment incentives (relocation bonus, student loan repayment, etc.) may be available based on agency need and budget.
- PCS (Permanent Change of Station) allowances may be authorized.
